Fortunate, Indeed.
Jesus’ General does Fortunate Son, Bushista-style.
An important point gets lost among the frothiness of the winger response is that this is not a slap at the younger family members, so much as ripping to shreds the values taught within the family, using that truth “actions speak louder than words.” If the Bush family demanded of its children what it demands of the country, we would see it (at least partially) in the actions and words of the individual family members. For example:
it’s not that Jeb Jr. was foolin’ around, it’s that he attacked people who wanted him to stop.
It’s not that Jenna and Not-Jenna are not prim and proper ladies, it’s that what contributions to charity they have made have been completely lukewarm and thoroughly vetted in order not to conflict with what the elders want the rest of us to do.
It’s not that Noelle does drugs, it’s that her father has one set of standards for his daughter, and quite another for the rest of us.
It’s not that George P. did a lawn job on an ex-girl-friend’s lawn, it’s that he felt it appropriate to invade someone else’s home and freak out at them.
There is a class conflict here, and it’s an all-pervasive one, that’s born out of the same mentality as the “self-made” millionaire who justifies moving his assets off-shore by saying “nobody ever gave me anything.” The same sort of person whose employees were educated in public schools, who went to a state university, whose companies are powered by an electrical infrastructure built with public money, whose bank account is FDIC insured, who calls the police when he doesn’t like what people are doing on his lawn, and who calls city hall when his kids are in lockup.
For an interesting take on it, I recommend Frank Schaeffer’s Baby Jack.
