So I saw this video last night (well, very early this morning).
Update: if you want to know more about what happened, here’s an article for you.
It’s awesome that the kid is OK, what people do when they’re not thinking is depressing and scary (and good for an evil chuckle in lieu of whistling in the dark), gawking bystanders REALLY REALLY suck, and it’s awesome that the person who (presumably) was running the place understood things well enough (or more depressingly, had had this happen before at the laundromat) to intuitively know that cutting power to the machine was the fastest, safest way of containing the situation, giving him time to work on the door.
But none of those things reveal much of anything to me.
The COMMENTS section, though… that’s where you’ll find examples of the amazing range that human feeling can exist in (Warning, much offensiveness after the jump. If you’re looking for some of these comments in the thread (linked above), you may have to unhide them – many were marked as spam.):
The passive but empathetic viewer of the spectacle:

A bitter rear-guard action:
Google the name Lindsay Fiddler, she’s a white woman that INTENTIONALLY put her 10 day old daughter in a washing machine and “slept” as she drowned to death, Lindsay was convicted of manslaughter last November.
This has nothing to do with race and it wasn’t done with the intention of maliciousness as the video proves, this is just PURE STUPIDITY at it’s finest; but if you wanna make this stupid act about race, talk about Lindsay Fiddler as well.
Racist are so stupid it’s funny LOL

Quiet empathy:
I feel bad for the parents – one bad decision, and torture ensues. Encouraging exploration and new experiences is good, but this one probably should’ve been thought out a bit better.

Righteous outrage:
If this is what they do in public what happens behind closed doors?? They should both be arrested.

Plain old curmudgeonly fatalism:
Just for the people that said “black are bad parents” or something of that nature, click on the sidebar where it says “Parenting Fail Compilation” there is plenty of messed up white people too. Stupidity has no race, gender, or creed its everywhere and spreading like a virus.

People who think they can read minds through video:
What the fuck is with all this shit about them punishing the kid? If you’re to fucking stupid to see that these pieces of shit were obviously just putting on a show and were only doing it to sue the laundry place. They should be killed. Straight up. You can see that they put a load in right next to that one. They new exactly what was going to happen. They just need to die.

And more empathy:
oh my gosh i have tears in my eyes right now. i cannot imagine the horror when they realized it had locked. joke or not it’s a stupid idea to shut the door with a child in there…just in case something like that were to happen.

If you want to understand just what a myth the polite facade of normality that we present to the world is (and that is in turn presented to us) without possibly getting shot, stabbed, or otherwise experiencing a life-destroying event, just read the comments sections on videos depicting ordinary people involved in something unexpected. That’s where people let their unfiltered (though not necessarily honest, kind, decent, or charitable) feelings shine through. It’s also interesting to look for the people who are watching it as something that happened in the past, and therefore looking at it critically, rather than as an emotional participant. Some neat people and some really creepy people there, too.
Oh, and now you have another few bits of understanding as to why I don’t make friends easily. :D
